When a thousand young adults fill in a church in Anaheim, California, it’s more than likely not because of a sermon. That’s not to say that sermons aren’t fun and overly exciting, but seeing over one-hundred bands over a three day period seems more attractive. In a sweaty mess, over two-hundred people crowded around the main stage in the church parking lot where the first band was kicking off the three day event, and who better than one of the greatest live bands in modern history, Underoath.
The next few hours of running in and out of buildings in eighty degree heat to watch their favorite bands, the crowds grew to well over six-hundred on the first day. The guest list included such bands as mewithoutyou, David Bazan, Noise Ratchet, Joy Electric, Starflyer 59, ZAO, The Rocket Summer, etc. The list goes on and on, and being that this was a Christian event (hence, the church setting), all of the bands that played were in one way or another connected religiously or something very close, so many people may hear that and immediately turn and run away, but the line up consisted of bands that have been widely accepted across the mainstream music scene across not only America, but internationally.
If, during your next spring break, or summer break in Washington State, you feel like taking a trip and attending a festival worth marking the calendar for, Tomfest is easily a must-see. Not only is it in two states, but also in nice weather with such a diverse arrangement of music, everything from screamo to hip-hop, everyone is sure to find something they like.
