Photography by Peter Strand, Pikes Peak News Designer
Andy Warhol’s Dream America, which is on display at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center until the end of the year, features more than 100 screen prints of Mao Tse Tung, Campbell’s Soup, John F. Kennedy campaign poster, Jackie I and Jackie II, and Mick Jagger, as well as several self-portraits.
As one of the pop artists of the ’50s and ‘60s, Warhol brought silkscreen printing out of the commercial world into the fine art studios. His artistic commentary involves American society, commerce and everyday life, as well as his playful exploitation of American culture, fame and stardom as seen in his prints of John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Einstein. His works are a reminder of a time and place in our cultural history.
At present admission to all Fine Arts showings are free to Pikes Peak Community College students. Hours for the Fine Arts Center are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Fine Arts Center is located at Dale Street and Cascade Avenue. The Center can be reached by taking I-25 and turning east on the Uintah (Exit 143) to Cascade and turn south on Cascade to Dale.
