Cyrille Parent, director of Information Technology at PPCC, presented a comprehensive plan to Student Government for a wireless Internet hub at all three campuses. All hardware will be supplied by CISCO with the first hub installed in the new Student Center. If funding is approved, installment could go as early as the Center opens.
Even at a 30 percent discount, the first phase of installing WI-FI access at Centennial will cost $31,241. This is part of a state-wide consolidation effort to provide WI-FI to all state funded facilities that need it. CISCO will be providing for all of it.
As it stands now, the program will expand later to the Downtown Student Campus in phase two. That expansion will cost approximately $15,000. Phase three proposes WI-FI access to the Rampart Range Campus at $20,000. If all is successful, the access will be expanded to the CC Atrium for around $3,000. Afterward, remaining areas will be covered, but those time projections are still too far ahead to give any cost estimates.
Many computers are made with wireless access nowadays. More and more students are carrying lap-tops, and Internet access has become a key survival issue for most college students. These new measures will help to ensure easier access for all students who need it.
