Serving Pikes Peak Community College students |
|
By Ian Kozisek
Pikes Peak Community College has a secret but no one has ever tried to keep it. In fact the secret is right out in the open. The secret is the Almagre magazine.
Since 2000 Almagre has been showcasing the arts and literature of PPCC students and the community. Fiction, poetry, non-fiction, photography, oil painting, and even jewelry, are just some of the diverse art forms this magazine features.
The magazine has a circulation of 1,500 and is distributed to PPCC and UCCS students, as well as other locations.
The first issue of the magazine took first place in the Southwest Division of the Community College Association. The magazine continued to win awards in the second and first place positions in subsequent issues. Jessica Pocock, a student working on the Almagre magazine, says "It's a high class magazine; it's not just for Pikes Peak (Community College) you can take anywhere and use it on your resume or in your art portfolio."
New for spring semester is the Literary Magazine class, taught by Deidre Farrington-Schoolcraft. This allows the students working on the magazine to receive college credit for the work they do on the magazine. Editing, layout, etc., are done by students in the class.
Previously the magazine was part of Computer Graphics II with instructor Kris Akse. Computer Graphics II handled the design of the magazine however this year the class did not have enough people to be held. Aske has stepped in as a faculty consultant, acting as a director and designer for the magazine.
This years Almagre will feature 17 literary pieces and 21 art pieces. These works were chosen from the student art show and approximately 200 submissions of literary work. Literary submissions are accepted during the fall semester with most art being selected from the student art show with an open call for other work.
Another new addition to this year's Almagre is the release party which will be May 6th from 7-10 p.m. and is called "Almagre in the Making." This party will launch the magazine as well as feature some of the artists performing their work live.(Back to top)
