A Beautiful Cause for a Beauty Queen
Tiffany Sawyer, whose husband, Nathan, is a Army captain in the 43rd Area Support Group, organized the Miss Patriot Colorado Pageant to raise money for the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund. “Believe it or not I was mowing my lawn last summer and I wanted to try to find a way raise money where kids can be involved for other kids who needed money who have lost a parent in the war”...more
Special Report on Autism
Life with Autism
When my son, Xander, was 15 months old, my husband and I noticed that he didn’t “have” words yet. On occasion he would stand isolated and say his ABCs and 123s, but never at our request. When we’d try to interact with him or encourage him, he would stop using his voice. As a baby, he didn’t babble or gesture by pointing or waving. We went to our pediatrician, who wanted to take a “wait and see” approach until his next appointment at 18 months. Unfortunately, our pediatrician was deceased before our next appointment...more

Autism Rate now 1 in 150
Autism Spectrum Disorders are more common than previously estimated, according to a new study by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.) The new prevalence reports for Autism were released on February 8, 2007. The report indicates that the new autism rate is now 1 in 150 children, up from 1 in 166 in the CDC’s 2004 report...more

Developmental Disability Backlog
After seeing problems with your child, he or she is diagnosed with a developmental disability. Your child requires special help, and your daycare center can’t handle the needs. There is nowhere to go. You are already living paycheck to paycheck, and now you are missing work to go to doctors and therapy appointments...more
The Golden Goddess
We’ve all seen them, the ones with the perfectly bronzed skin, but what we may not realize is that all of the beautifully tanned skin is damaged skin. Although the tan may look pretty, it is certainly not healthy.

Everyone knows what a tan looks like, but what exactly is a tan? When a person is exposed to UV light, the skin produces melanin (pigment). Melanin helps to absorb the radiation as a means of protecting the skin from being damaged. The reason most people do not develop a tan in just one day is because it takes time to produce the melanin...more
Being at the Right Place, at the Right Time
A little over a year ago Brian Robinson was working and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center as an entry level assistant. He had never thought of becoming a Museum Curator. However, as Robinson puts it, “a fortunate set of circumstances” helped him land a position he had never even went to school for. By showing he was hard working, dependable, and willing to learn, Robinson had impressed his boss enough to be promoted to Curatorial Assistant of Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center: Modern Arts Center...more

Media Matters
The Web of Communication
Is it possible that the Internet was once a figment of something from the future? This is definitely hard to believe when people look at today’s ways of communication. The idea of the Internet and its different functions was once not even a consideration. It was an impossible idea that has not become possible. Technology has infiltrated many parts of people’s lives, but the biggest section it has permeated has been in the area of communication...more

The Woes of the Media
The media is all gloom and doom. That is the plain and simple truth. No matter what happens, the media always manage to see the darkest side of the story. Every day, the newspapers and news stations print at least one story that points out the downfalls of President Bush. Do the media ever see anything positive when a Republican is President? Somehow I’m not able to imagine that. My reasoning is the media do not seem to enjoy pointing out the good things that President Bush has done for our country, such as decreasing unemployment...more
